New nickname for Grandma!
While dressing Kate this morning, I asked her who gave her this outfit. She told me, "GaGa Starbucks." So Grandma Starla, you have now become GaGa Starbucks....and will probably remain that way because I laughed when she said it! She now knows it's funny and has been saying it all morning. As Grandpa Bob has morphed into Gumpa Bobcat, I think you two will be quite the pair! Kate accompanied Ryan and I to my 16-week doctor's appointment today, and we're happy to report that the baby seems to be quite healthy. The heartrate was loud and clear, and he/she even kicked at the wand. Kate did the same thing every time...could we have another Kate on our hands???

Little house on the High Desert
Kate just needed a bonnet and a flowy dress and she could have been Laura Ingalls Wilder running around her little house on the prairie. Seriously, Kate was outside 90% of the time we were in Bend and I still don't think she got enough. The weather cooperated with her desire to play outdoors, so we pretty much let her loose to run. By our last day there, she was even covering herself in dirt and gleefully shouting "make a mess!" I don't know if she'll ever like getting her hands dirty, but she seems to have adjusted to the rest of her being covered in dirt. My mom rightfully pointed out that Kate might need a wardrobe just for Dusty Loop (this is a great excuse for her to do yet more shopping for our little fashion plate!) When she wasn't outside, Kate did a lot of "cooking" with my mom and was very helpful when my mom and Bill were playing cards. Or, rather, she was helpful to Bill because she happily announced "I see a five" when she saw my mom's cards. Just wait until she knows ALL her numbers!! We got back yesterday afternoon, and Kate was SO excited to see daddy. Since she has decided that she no longer sleeps in the car, even on 5 hour drives, she was so exhausted that by about 5 pm she was stumbling around like she'd been drinking heavily. We managed to hold her off until 6:30 when she fell soundly asleep as I read her a story. I suppose exhaustion is a sign of a great trip!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
Kate and I are having a great time in Bend, although we're missing Ryan a lot!! I think he's missing us too since he says the house is VERY quiet. I imagine it would be wonderful to be in all that quiet-ness for a day or so, but then I'd be missing Kate's constant flow of conversation, too. Kate and I were asked a few times today if we were Irish (thanks to the red hair). We're not, but I told Kate that, someday, it will come in handy for her to say yes because it will get her lots of free green beer! As she's a tad underage and I'm pregnant, neither of us indulged today. We are having a great time with Grandma and Grandpa, although photographic evidence will have to wait because I can't load photos on my mom's computer (or, rather, I have no idea how....) Trust that Kate is indeed a farm girl at hear, though. From the moment she wakes up until the time she goes to bed, she talks constantly about her "chores" of "feeding dogs," "feeding horses," "feeding Opus the cat," "walking dogs," etc., etc. She would very happily be outside ALL day and, even after she's been out for hours, she wails "outside PLEASE" as soon as we come inside. She cracks us up because she loves playing outside, but she does not love dirt. She calls it "big mess." She's started picking up rocks and hay, though, so I guess we're making progress. I'm sure it won't be long before she's rolling in Dusty Loop's dust just like her beloved dogs and horses!

Way to go, Singletons!!

Babies, babies, babies!! Come September and October, the Singletons will be doing their part to extend the next generation. We've now had news that TWO of Ryan's cousins are expecting. First, Cindy and Dennis will be having their second baby within days of us. And, just today, we learned that Bill and Sarah are having TWINS in October. I also have two friends from high school who are due in July and a friend I met in Port Angeles who is due in June (she's also the only other person I know with a red-haired, blue-eyed girl!) Here's to 7 healthy babies later this year!!! To add to this wonderful excitement, Kate and I leave tomorrow for a week in Bend. We'll miss Ryan a lot, but we are looking forward to it!

Random tip for my fellow mommies....
If you have a major squirmer during diaper changes (like I do), here's a mommy-to-mommy (or daddy, obviously) tip. In Kate's music class, the teacher pretends to "blow" on and off the lights. All the kids think this is hysterical and they basically fight to line up to help. I've employed this "magic" while I change Kate's diaper and it works like a charm! She even says "mommy magic," which is as close as I'll ever get to doing any sort of mind-trick. So, there's my random thought for the day. Hope it helps (clearly it only helps those with a changing table near a light switch, but still....)!

Yes, they DO grow up too fast!
I always hear people say that kids grow up too fast, but I think in Kate's case it just might be true. This afternoon, while I was trying to clean out my closet a bit, I found her trying on my underwear!! And she knew how to do it! When I found her, she was trying to dress her lion as well. I told her she may have to wait until she's out of diapers before she shops at Victoria's Secret. Perhaps I should get going on this whole potty training thing.....

Like mother, like daughter
When I was younger, one of my favorite toys were My Little Ponies. My mom had the foresight to save them and now they are Kate's favorites, too. She "feeds" them everyday and calls it "doing chores." This should make Grandpa Bill quite proud! Yesterday, after the horses had been fed, Kate told me she wanted a "noga (yoga) mat." I unrolled one for her and she set her horses on it and then told me she was going to "teach class," which is what we tell her I am doing on the evenings I teach my class. She must be paying attention because she was saying "downdog" to all the horses and even modeling it for them. This time, I was the one who was proud!!

First trimester? Check.
I've reached 12 weeks now and so I SHOULD be entering into the much nicer, much more energetic and much less nauseated second trimester. Here's hoping!! I don't want to jinx it but I think I've turned the corner with the nausea. I'm not 100% but I don't feel yucky constanty, so that must be a good sign! My goal this weekend (and it's quite a lofty one!) is to buy some new toothpaste because I don't think I can ever again look at the kind I've been using these past weeks. My belly is definitely bigger this time around than it was at this same stage with Kate. As long as there's only one in there, I'm fine with it! I found a picture of me 10 days before I had Kate and she's been carrying it around all week. She looks at it in complete wonder, as if I've got to be kidding to look like that. I told her that SHE was in my tummy and she just looked at me like "give me a break...I'm not falling for that." I can't imagine what she'll think when I start looking like that again!

Fun with GaGa & Gumpa!
Ryan and I are officially old news now that Kate has Grandma and Grandpa around--and Ryan and I aren't complaining! It's so fun to watch Kate bond with them more and more each day. She also does her best to show off for them, acting even sillier than usual. We've had a great visit so far, and we have them here for two more days, so we'll cherish each minute! We spend a great deal of time just watching all Kate's antics, but we have gotten out and about a bit. Kate loved spending hours in the backyard swinging with Gumpa and gardening with GaGa, and they came to music class and play group with her. Since the weather is pretty good again today, we'll likely head out to the park (if we make it out of the backyard, that is...) Each time we have family visit, we realize ever more how wonderful it would be to be closer to everybody. We'll see what happens.....
